Short Stories

Short Story    1.  A short piece of prose fiction, having few characters and aiming at unity of effect.

Short stories are similar to works of fiction when dealing with the elements presented, however, short stories tend to differ from novels in that they are shorter in length.  Elements found in short stories are; plot, character, theme, point of view, symbol, irony, emotion, humor, fantasy etc.  Each story should be judged by how fully it achieves its central purpose.  For example, in “The Swimmer,” the main idea is to discuss the dangers of alcohol and warn the reader about the end result of alcoholism and the pain it causes.
